March 13, 2019- Forensic Nurse Testimony Training

This course is designed to provide forensic and emergency department nurses with a better understanding of the court process.  Nurses will gain practice in courtroom testimony, and will increase understanding about their role in testimony.  This course is ideal for nurses who have never testified, or have only done so a handful of times and those who simply wish to increase their confidence in courtroom.  Training will be facilitated by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, and the keynote will feature Nadia Wardrip, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney assigned to the Lake County Felony Division Special Victims Unit.

Hosted by ICESA, this training is for Victim Advocates who work with victims of sexual assault through Rape Crisis Centers or Dual Service providers.  

The CORE 40 is a FREE Sexual Assault Victim Advocate training designed primarily for sexual assault advocates who are staff or volunteers working with victims of sexual assault through Rape Crisis Centers or Dual Service Providers. The training topics are standardized with suggested teaching points that allow for consistency throughout the field. This training offers the necessary "core" or basic knowledge and skills to provide competent and effective crisis intervention services to victims.

May 26, 2017- Impact of Trauma on Health and Academic Achievement

This one day seminar is hosted by University of Indianapolis and the Metropolitan Indianapolis Central Indiana Area Health Education Center.  

Students, educators, health professionals, and everyone in between, join us on May 26 to learn more about a phenomenon affecting a majority of people - trauma. Explore the impact of trauma on health and academic achievement AND where we go from here given what we know now.

The day will include...

  • Eye opening revelations from keynote speakers and esteemed experts in the field, Dr. Vincent Felitti and Dr. Jeanie Tietjen. 
  • A variety of powerful breakout session
  • Explore strategies for combating the impact of trauma
  • Learn skills to enhance education and health outcomes
  • And, a special self-care treat for caregivers (lay to professionals) about handling compassion fatigue due to exposure to secondary trauma for those for whom you care/educate.

For decades, it has been common practice to address challenges around race and income as a means to improve education and health outcomes. Yet, new methods also include addressing trauma in order to influence outcomes. Sexual assault victims must provide informed consent for a medical forensic exam. Although the concept of informed consent is a term that healthcare providers are very familiar with, there are additional legal implications associated with consent for the exam that providers need to understand. Victims need relevant information on the impact of participating in or declining each component of the exam.
