President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope that you had an opportunity to take some time for yourself this summer. It is difficult to be caring and compassionate when your feeling strained and tired. I have had a wonderful summer. I have especially enjoyed the opportunity to meet with our local chapters and to meet emergency nurses in their home environments. This year I met with the North Central Chapter, the Northeast chapter, the Wabash Valley Roadrunners and with my local chapter Northwest . I hope to get the opportunity to visit the chapters in Indianapolis, Columbus and Evansville before the end of my term. I want to thank Laura Issen from Scheering-Plough and Integrilin for making it possible for me to visit our local chapters and providing dinner for each of the visits.

Our delegates are preparing to attend the General Assembly in Orlando. We will be reviewing all of the potential by-laws resolutions in preparation. We will also caucus formally on Wednesday evening so that are votes are cast in the best interest of our membership. Our membership increased this year which added an additional member to our delegation. My promise is that we will represent Indiana well.

Our national organization has successfully weathered a very turbulent storm this year. As the old saying goes "what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger" really rang true. ENA is now a stronger, leaner machine. Revenues are exceeding expectation and expenses are below expectation without sacrificing service. I feel confident in our national leadership and in the strength of the organization. At the state level, we prepared to scale back when it seemed possible that our major sources of income would be delayed in arriving. Since our assessments from national are now up to date, our coffers are full and we are again "in the money". I am proud that we didn’t sacrifice service as part of preparation for lean times.

In November, the State Council will be offering some great educational offerings. First, the first ENCARE training sessions in a number of years is planned for November. ENPC and TNCC Instructor bridge course are scheduled to coincide with these courses. Plan to attend ENCARE training, bridge your instructor status or both on the weekend of November 6, 7 and 8th. What a great opportunity to meet your friends and network! Please see the applications included in this newsletter.

Lastly, and certainly most importantly, in this newsletter you will find a ballot for election of our officers for 2002. The nominations committee done an excellent job of selecting candidates for office. I urge you to return your ballot ASAP and I encourage to write in any other candidates that you feel are suitable.

Thanks for the opportunity to serve you. I look forward to reporting to you about the General and Scientific Assemblies.

Regards,

Joie

Breast Cancer Petition From Mike Seaver

If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times...If you are receiving this, it's because I think you are a loving, caring, person who will take the 30 seconds to go and vote on this issue...and send it on to others you know who will do the same.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. PLEASE!!!! sign the petition by clicking on the web site below and help women living with breast cancer get the care they need and deserve!!
